This category is for Waymarking the Super Fund sites all over the world. The logs will serve to keep an update on them.

What is a Super Fund site ?
"A polluted site is a place where human activities, most often industrial, have introduced substances to the biosphere that are harmful to the environment and to humans."

Biosphere pollution affects people through direct ingestion, absorption through skin contact, animal feed, plant feed, water skin contact, animal feed, plant feed, water, fish and inhalation of gases, vapors and dusts.
Soil pollution also affects:
  • animals through direct ingestion ;
  • water, which affects fruits and vegetables, groundwater and surface water, fish, showers, baths and showers, baths and swimming;
  • the air
Expanded Description:
"Years ago, people were less aware of how dumping chemical wastes might affect public health and the environment. On thousands of properties where such practices were intensive or continuous, the result was uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites, such as abandoned warehouses and landfills."quote from EPA

Governments, faced with these health risks, have been obliged to:

  • reference these sites, some countries provide a precise database of their location (a non-exhaustive list is provided at the end of the description)
  • assess the cost of remediation for each site
  • restrict access
  • initiate clean-up work when realistic

Waymarks placed in this category must be one from a SuperFund sites government list, for examples :

This list will be enriched according to the information provided by the waymarkers.
No waymark can be published without belonging to an official governmental list.

Instructions for Posting a Super Fund Sites Waymark:

To post a waymark in this category you must find a Super Fund site, record its location, take some pictures and gather some useful information about it.

This site MUST be recorded in a government register, a web page link is required

Please take in consideration that visiting these sites can be a health risk

  • Coordinates must be taken at a safe spot, at the entrance to the site with the appropriate signage or a visitor platform if available.
  • You MUST provide at least two different photos , one could be a close up photo of the sign of the site and the other showing the site and its surroundings. (It has to be daylight photos of good quality taken by you.) Additional photographs are encouraged.
  • A minimum of two (2) sentences composed by the submitter are required. You are encouraged to include more information about your experiences while discovering a Super fund site. The 2 sentence requirement is to be a personal narrative and is in addition to any copied text.
  • Waymarks without Long / Detailed description will not be accepted.
  • Citations are allowed, but must be clearly declared, including the source.
  • The description must be in understandable English, but other languages are encouraged.
  • You must make every attempt to follow a naming convention: Super fund site Name - City, State, Country
